IPL 2026: three phases, three captain philosophies

League, playoff window and final — each segment has a different captain pick. The Vision11 IPL Season desk keeps a calendar and a phase note for every fixture.

The IPL Season desk divides the tournament into three phases

The Vision11 IPL 2026 desk treats the tournament as three distinct phases. Each phase rewards a different squad, a different captain archetype, and a different reading of the calendar. The captain philosophy that wins the league phase is not the captain philosophy that wins the playoff window — and the final is its own game entirely.

This hub is the home for that read. Match windows, phase notes, fixture-ledger tables and the captain philosophy that fits each segment.

League phase: read the squad rotation

The league phase is the longest segment. Squad rotation matters more than form — teams rest players, swap impact players, and test combinations ahead of the playoff window. Captain picks during the league phase reward the player who is set in the XI, not the player who is in form across formats.

The desk's threshold for a league-phase captain pick is: at least six consecutive league XI appearances and a 50+ average in the role during the current season. The role is a top-order anchor on a flat surface, or a finger-spin all-rounder on a slow turner. Vice-captain picks are role-specialists — the death bowler, the impact-player finisher.

Playoff window: read the role specialist

The playoff window is short and intense. Squad rotation stops. The teams that make the playoffs are the ones whose best XI is locked. Captain picks during the playoff window reward the role-specialist who has done one job well all season — the death bowler, the impact-player finisher, the powerplay wicket-taker.

The desk's threshold for a playoff-window captain pick is: the role-specialist who has averaged 60+ fantasy points across the last five league fixtures. The role is the death bowler who can bowl in two blocks of two overs each, or the impact-player finisher who can score 30+ off 12 balls. The captain slot rewards the player who can change one phase, not the one who is steady across phases.

Final: the format flattens

The IPL final is its own game. Squad rotation is zero. The role-specialist's role is locked. The best player on the night wins. The desk's threshold for a final captain pick is the player who has averaged 80+ fantasy points across the last three league fixtures and the Qualifier — the one in peak form, with a clear role, in a winning side.

Captain picks during the final are the simplest read of the season. The deck's standing rule is: back the player in peak form with a clear role in a winning side. Differentials earn a slot only when they have cleared three independent signals across the season.

How this hub fits with the rest of the desk

This hub is the home for the IPL 2026 calendar and phase notes. The Fantasy Cricket desk covers the weekly squad pass. The Cricket Analysis desk covers the format ledger. The Live Scores desk republishes verified scores. The Winners desk carries the anonymized payout ledger.

If you are reading this in the playoff window, the desk's captain-pick-of-the-week explainer covers the role-specialist read in detail.
